Gearing Up for Adventure

The Scout Uniform
The official Scout uniform helps create a sense of belonging and identity. It typically includes:
- Official Scout shirt (differs for Cub Scouts and Scouts BSA)
- Neckerchief and slide
- Belt and optional cap
- Pants or shorts (official or similar color)
Essential Gear
Beyond the uniform, scouts will need a handbook for their program. For camping and outdoor activities, basic gear like a sleeping bag, backpack, and mess kit will be useful. Your local troop will provide guidance on specific needs.
Where to Buy: Uniforms and handbooks can be purchased from official Scout Shops (online or local) or sometimes through your local chapter. Some troops may have a "uniform closet" for hand-me-downs.
Cost Estimates: A new basic uniform might range from $70-$150. Handbooks are around $20-$30. Costs can be managed by buying pieces over time or seeking used items. Don't let cost be a barrier – talk to your local chapter about options (see Financial Aid below).
Understanding Scouting Fees
We strive to make Scouting affordable. Fees typically cover registration, insurance, program materials, and some activity costs.
- Annual Membership Dues: A national registration fee, plus any local council or chapter fees. This often ranges from $80 - $200 per year.
- Activity Fees: Costs for specific events like campouts, field trips, or special workshops. These vary by activity and troop.
- Uniform & Handbook: As mentioned above, these are initial one-time costs, though parts of the uniform may need updating as a Scout grows or advances.
Financial Aid & Assistance
We believe every child should have the opportunity to experience Scouting. Financial assistance, or "Scoutreach" programs, may be available through local councils or chapters to help cover registration fees and, in some cases, uniform costs.
Please don't hesitate to discuss any financial concerns with your local chapter leaders. They can provide information on available support and fundraising opportunities to help offset costs. Our goal is to welcome everyone.
