Frequently Asked Questions
Most Scout troops and Cub Scout packs meet once a week for about 60-90 minutes during the school year. Dens (smaller groups within a Cub Scout pack) may also have separate meetings. Additionally, there are typically monthly pack or troop activities, such as an outdoor adventure, service project, or field trip on a weekend.
The exact schedule can vary by chapter, so it's best to check with your local troop or pack leaders.
No experience is necessary! Scouting is designed for all youth, regardless of their background. New scouts are taught everything they need to know, starting with basic skills and gradually building up their knowledge and confidence. Experienced scouts and adult leaders are there to guide and support them every step of the way.
The program is structured to be inclusive and to help each child learn and grow at their own pace.
Badges (often called merit badges in Scouts BSA or adventure belt loops/pins in Cub Scouts) are earned by completing a set of requirements for a specific skill or area of knowledge. These requirements often involve learning, doing, and teaching others.
- Cub Scouts: Adventures are completed with their den, involving hands-on activities, games, and outings. Completion earns belt loops or pins.
- Scouts BSA: Merit badges cover a wide range of topics (over 135!). Scouts work with approved Merit Badge Counselors to complete requirements, which can involve research, projects, skill demonstrations, and discussions.
Earning badges is a way for scouts to explore new interests, develop skills, and gain a sense of accomplishment.
Costs typically include an annual national registration fee, local council/chapter fees, uniform costs, and handbook costs. There may also be fees for specific activities like campouts or special events. Many troops engage in fundraising to help offset these costs.
Financial assistance is often available. Please see our Fees Breakdown section on the "How to Join" page or speak with a local chapter leader for more details.
